A few weeks ago we returned from a blissful weeks holiday in Exmoor. I thought I should tell you how wonderful the campsite was in case anyone else is thinking of holidaying down that way.
Firstly the managers are the nicest people you could ever want to meet, offering tea and coffee on arrival. they're also dog owners so welcome, rather than tolerate, dogs.
It is an adults only site so no screaming kids at the crack of dawn. I did check and it's not a swingers site or anything, they just dont allow children because of the water hazards!
The site is on a wedge of land with a river running along one side and a mill stream running along the other. The pitches were MASSIVE and you get a whole strip of grass between the little roadway and the river or stream, depending on what side you pitch. We put up a huge garden area using temporary fencing without any bother, you could easily fit 3 caravans on each pitch. there are also hard standing pitches which were equally big. There is electric hook-ups and TV aerial points.
The toilets and showers were great and free, chemical disposal point well kept and very clean. There is a little shop on site with the basics but they'll happily order in anything you want. There is very little phone signal unless you're with Orange, but there is free wifi in the information shed (full of useful info on local walks, restaurants, etc), we were able to still get the wifi on our iphones halfway across the site.
The Badgers Holt pub is just over the road, is very dog friendly and serves lovely and reasonably priced food.
There are some lovely walks nearby, many of them alongside the river. Tarr Steps is a must, such a beautiful place (thanks to the spring-thingers who recommended it it us!).
BUT, the important bit - The dog exercise area is the best I have ever, or probably will ever see! It is at the far end of the wedge of land so the dogs can splash around in the river or mill stream until their hearts content. There is a really pretty weir at the end with a bench so you can sit and watch the dogs having fun in the river.
We will definitely be returning!
