Posts: 35 Dec 26 11 8:12 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Tags : None Well I have half permission from my good lady to get another Spaniel to go with my 3 year old Dog who suffers from IOHC, he's had several operations (some of which I spoke about on here) http://springthing.3.forumer.com/index.php...opic=29526&st=0 and now suffers with a permanent limp on his right foreleg. Now having read about this IOHC problem and coming to the understanding that it's more a male issue than female I'd like a female springer to lessen the chance of having this problem again. (I've spent over £4000 in less than three years treating his problems and he's on permanent anti arthritis drugs for the rest of his life). He still has his bits and has a wonderful pedigree and I had hoped to able to breed from him and to keep one of his offspring to bring on. This isn't going to happen so I'm going to try and find a good bitch to be able to work on a regular basis. Trouble is I'd take a female rescue dog on but I doubt if they'd let me have one as my wife and I work all day and this is frowned upon. (my current dog is very good when we have to leave him at home and generally he lives in my van during the colder parts of the year, quite happily sleeping away till we stop for lunch)! So this leaves getting a new puppy... which would be quite a challenge again... Anyone got any other ideas? I would love a partner to my B&W springer to be able to work at least one dog on a reliable basis.

NWESSR doesn't home to familes that work full time but you may find on that does. There are a couple of points to keep in mind though. You say you want to work the dog but unless a Rescue has a trained working dog in they cannot guarantee that any dog they have will work so you need to think about that and what you would do if your new dog was gun shy or simply not going to make the grade. The other is that unless you spay her you really should have your boy castrated. You would not want to pass on his genes and life with two entire dogs on male and one female can be quite tricky. I suggest you need to think this through very thoroughly. Not tyring to pour cold water on you but you have to take all eventualities into account Good luck Liz NWESSR

Extreme Springaholic Posts: 5383 Dec 27 11 1:56 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	If you go down the puppy route I would hhigly recommend looking for a breeder who health tests (very few at the monet but I do know of some) which includes hips, elbows, eyes and any genetic tests. You could try samsalin rescue who rehome working dogs to working homes, but I couldnt say what their policy is re: full time workers I would say, if you prefer a rescue, contact all rescues and ask them if its not on their website, if they would rehome to a household with full time workers.

Samsalin do not just rehome gun dogs to working families. You do not see any dog. YOU are seen and they then will work out the most appropriate dog for you and that is the dog you will have if they do offer a dog. The best thing is to talk to them up there on the east coast, think its lincolnshire but you can read how they operate on line. Liz has made a very good point about the speying or castrating and many people dont like to have their dogs done. My friends have 2 rough collies, a dog that the male refuses to have castrated and a 'rescue' breeding bitch who they did have speyed. tHE MALE IS A MAGNIFICIENT LOVELY DOG BUT CAN BE VERY FEISTY AND AGRESSIVE WITH OTHER MALE DOGS, ESPECIALLY VERY BUTCH MALE DOGS......not Riley as he is soppy and its the bitch that tells him off. Posts: 5594 Dec 27 11 10:59 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	SORRY IT POPPED OFF...IN THE MEANTIME HAVE CHECKED THE SAMSALIN WEB SITE....it is under construction but if you go into WAYNNSON gun dogs which comes up in the list if you google samsalin rescue, it tells you all about them....have a little peep now........they could be a good practical and down to earth organisation to help and they are in East Yorkshire by the way!!!!!.

Posts: 35 Dec 27 11 6:48 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Thanks for the replies, I'm only trying to work out how to go about getting another dog, of course Louis will be castrated if I have a female dog around, I've only not had him done at the moment as he isn't an aggressive dog, and I've been letting him fully mature before they come off. I was sort of under the impression that rescue bitches came spayed from the majority of rescue centres? I'll have a look at the SAMSALIN website and get a better picture to start with.

Caroline or steve will talk you through what they have available (if any). Ronnie came from there unneutered and came into season the day we got her home so we had to wait to get her done. steve even met us at leeming bar services then took us to his home (also the rescue) to meet ronnie. The rest is history. Good luck in your search. you don't own dogs they own you.

Springaholic Posts: 642 Dec 28 11 12:10 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Hi With regard to spaying we spay all bitches when they are old enough ideally when they have had their first season but do not agree with spaying under 8 months at least so we only place with a home with no entire male in the house. If they are too young to spay it has to be a condition of adoption that they are spayed when old enough and we do check up that it has been done however we do also offer to pay for it for it.
