What's the going rate for a 1:1 session with a trainer? Taffy and I are going to go and get some professional help (she says she despairs of trying to train me unaided)

what does Taffy consider her specialist necessary subject should be????

would she like to be a gun dog????

What does Taffy consider to be her main problem/interest?

Taffy says she would like to be a gundog (or possibly an astronaut or a train driver)

and that she would like me to learn how to work with her rather than going off and doing my own thing

Think I paid about £50.00 for a 1:1 session, might have been a bit less. It was quite a long session and it helped to instill in her what we had learned in the baby class.

In hindsight, I think I should have carried on with the classes.

It varies, I know some that charge £20 an hr and some the same for the session up to 3 hrs...
It comes down to what you're prepared to pay.

My friend and pro gundog trainer charges £25 per hour. This is on her own ground. Don't know what she would charge for traveling to a client or even if she would offer that service.

Taffy's face, in that pic, is just too sweet to be trained!!!! she's a hopeless case, she would melt the trainer.
Clare in my village charges abt £40 an hour.
Jackie and Louis go to a gun dog trainer, not sure how much ask her....

I pay £30 for 1:1 - wouldn't expect to pay much more than that or rather couldn't afford to!

I think it depends on the methods used, clicker gundog training would be around £50 for the first one to one session and assessment and about £30 after that, positive reward based gundog training but not clicker wouldn't be much short of that i dont think, but we are talking South West prices and good gundog trainers that dont use harsh methods are few and far between.

Well, we had our first session 1:1 this morning. Paid £30, which seemed to me pretty reasonable. Trainer definitely clear that the way forward was to set the dog up to succeed and then praise it to high heaven.

Actually, Taffy did me proud and I was very pleased with her. Now we "just" have to do the homework. Going back in 4 weeks time.

I would dispute that, I have trained with many gundog trainers - some of them at the top of their game including championship winners and none of them use harsh methods. In fact one of the most successful and well known gundog trainers in the country is one of the loveliest, softest guys I've ever met.

I could confidently draw up a list of trainers that I would recommend to anybody. I'm sure there are still some that use old fashioned methods somewhere but trainers know that these methods won't be tolerated now and would quickly go out of business if they used them on other people's dogs. Also the modern working springer spaniel has been bred with biddability in mind and very harsh methods would just not work on them. In the old days the dogs were deliberately bred to be hard headed hunting machines that then had to be broken but that is not the case any longer.

Going back to the original question - £30 for a session with a gundog trainer is about right.

We usually pay £20 a session - that can be anything from 30 minutes to an hour and 30 minutes depending on which dog we are training with and also what we are training.

We also agree with Sandrab's comments regarding trainers. We are treasurer and secretary of a gundog training club and none of our trainers employ harsh methods - it just wouldn't be tolerated by the club or any of the people that take their dogs to them. We also know many other trainers through competing and would have no qualms in recommending them to people looking for help.

For gun dog training they seem to be around £30 and hour upwards but £30 seems to be the average.
I also think the training of gun dogs has changed and most trainers now use positive methods, you may get the odd bad apple but word soon gets round now that people are far more educated themselves on training and they quickly lose business.

hi i use stevie of Eshaldwell Gundog Training and she is really good. her rates are 1-1 assessement is £30 and then £25 per hour. i have found her really good and she lives in yorkshire. when she assessed louis she thought he had been trained before but using harsh methods as he knew what to do but had no manners!!! its how i keep him entertained on walks as he comes alive when you use a dummy. even though i have to keep stuffing his dummy as he chews through it!! at the moment its stuffed with old rags to a weight of 1/2 pound and then stitched with fishing line and its lasting.

i would recommend her to anyone as well as she is brilliant. love and licks jackie and louis
