Hi, I've noticed in the last week or so (especially now Summer has just been spayed) that she is getting a pin head and barrel shaped middle (a bit like me). Is this natural? She is eating a lot better than before as she was always picky with food but I give her two cup fulls of skinners at tea time plus the odd treat during the day but nothing to the excess? Is she just maturing or getting fat? She was under 25k when we had her spayed.

IME spayed bitches do not require a lot of food to maintain their weight. So if you have noticed her putting on weight, I'd cut back on her food. Her metabolism will have changed, so she simply requires fewer calories to keep her shape

Thanks Barneypip, I have noticed how she has changed. People say that bitches aren't any different after being spayed but she has really quietened down and actually will creep onto my knee now which she never used to she would just play bite before. I am trying to give her more exercise but her appetite has soared and she will look at me and make grunting noises when she is hungry. Will cut down her food intake and give her raw veg to snack on.

Oh Summer, carrots it is for thoses hungry snacky moments.

Jess' weight has not changed since being speyed but her personality has

She still lovely, but it was like she grew up overnight and became more serious and slightly more nervy. She still generally a happy go lucky girl though.

The weight thing was really pushed by my vet though, so I guess its a common side effect.

Bella didn't really change when we had her spayed I feed her the same as I always have and yes she is a bit nervy but then she was before too.

Like us its better to stop them putting weight on in the first place rather than waiting until they've put it on and then try to get it off. Cut her down slightly and bulk up with veg etc, if you feed kibble you could always go for a light version so she could have more bulk with less calories.

Yes I think they do tend to put on weight once spayed, although Bailey I believe was born the size of an elephant

As I feed raw I tend to do this anyway, but it might be a thought to use up all the old veg lurking in the bottom of the fridge by boiling it up and mashing it and giving it to Summer to help bulk out her meals. I usually portion it up and freeze it.

The only one of mine that slapped weight on was Meg and that was my fault, we soon got that off her and if anything i struggle to keep weight on her now, the other 3 haven't changed at all

Well, after the usual staring at me and grunting this morning, I got a raw chardoney carrot out of the fridge. She was not impressed at all. It was toss the carrot game, pop in mouth, spit out and try again. Got to laugh, she'd rather have a malted milk biscuit anytime but will have to stick to my guns now!
