A local dog died this weekend having eaten some cake that had Xylitol (sugar substitute) in it.
I was aware of the risks of sugar free chewing gum but not about xylitol in some cakes.
The poor owner was also unaware when her dog ate the cake (not fed by her but the poor boy scavenged it). If she'd known she would've taken him to the vet straight away, just as if he'd eaten chocolate. Unfortunately, she was too late despite the vet's best attempts to keep him alive for 48 hours.
Don't mean to be a gloomy ... just passing this on in case it helps anyone.
Apparently, it's also in toothpaste.
